The Laramie-Poudre Water Tunnel was originally constructed to bring water from the Laramie River to the Poudre River and completed in 1911. The west half of the tunnel was in poor condition after over 100 years of use and in 2019 work began to repair and restore this part of the tunnel. Ace Underground was contracted to provide onsite engineering and construction supervision for the owner and designers of the rehab plan. Work took place during winter months, when the tunnel wasn’t in use, in adverse conditions over the course of 4 years.
Massive rain and flooding during the Fall of 2013 along the Front Range of Colorado left US highway 34 severely damaged and impassable in many sections. In 2016, CDOT began permanent repairs to minimize future road loss due to the flooding of the Big Thompson. This plan called for shifting over 1.5 miles of road onto stable rock bedding. To accomplish this, over 600,000 cubic yards of rock was removed by drill and blast excavation. Project plans also required the construction of two bridges crossing the Big Thompson River. Adam Perney (Ace Underground) was responsible for geologic mapping, slope classification, cut slope design, and construction supervision/inspection for all the rock cuts made to complete the project. Mr. Perney was employed by the engineering design company responsible for the project design and plans.
CO 119 was impacted by the Fall 2013 floods and received funding for rehab and road improvement. The design included moving and widening the road as well as straightening out the curves. Construction of the new design included rock drilling and blasting inspection/supervision as well as slope scaling inspection. Mr. Perney covered inspection during the beginning of construction, and subsequently left the design company during this time to establish his own company, Ace Underground, in 2019.
Due to the erosion of the original sewer line, a new sewer line was installed at a depth of 35ft. Ace Underground was hired to provide construction inspection. Due to the unique soil conditions and depths of the shafts, Mr. Perney was onsite to identify and monitor the soils during shaft construction. Mr. Perney also would monitor and record the installation of the 24in. casing of the sewer.
